The Lindisfarne Gospels Facsimile

The Lindisfarne Gospels is an illuminated manuscript, hand-written on 250 leaves of vellum (calf skin). It contains the texts of the four Gospels in Latin.

The original manuscript was created in Lindisfarne, Northumbria in the late 7^th or early 8^th century. In the 10^th century, an old English (Anglo-Saxon) translation was added between the lines.  Also added was an inscription at the end of the text ascribing it to Eadfrith, Bishop of Lindisfarne (d.721), “in honor of God and of St. Cuthbert.”

In 1956, the Trustees of the British Museum authorized the publication of a complete color facsimile of these Gospels.  Westminster’s copy was donated to us by our neighbors at  Arcadia University. Our copy is number 95 out of 680.
