Day of Prayer and Fasting

October 10, 2012

Last year about this time Westminster’s administration began to face the prospect of financial hardship threatening the Seminary. Since then, many have prayed and given sacrificially to meet the needs of an institution whose mission is to “train Christian leaders to proclaim, teach and apply the whole counsel of God.” For those who have been blessed by Westminster, the idea of it going out of business is unthinkable. Perhaps more than at any time in its history, Westminster continues to play a unique role helping the church of Jesus Christ defend and spread the Word of God.

As we began this fiscal year in July, we gathered as a community for a day of fasting and prayer. As we met to pray, President Lillback shared good news of extraordinary blessing through special gifts to Westminster and new commitments of faith by visitors who had come to stay with us.

Since the day of prayer in July, we’ve seen God bless us with continued strong giving by friends of the Seminary. But we still face a difficult year. The Westminster Assembly’s Directory for the Publick Worship of God calls us to look to the God upon whom we depend: “When great and notable calamities come upon or threaten the church, community, or nation, when judgment is deserved because of sin, when the people seek some special blessing from the Lord, or when a pastor is to be ordained or installed (Form of Government, Chapter XXIII, Section 7), it is fitting that the people of God engage in times of solemn prayer and fasting.”

The faculty has called the friends of Westminster to another solemn day of prayer and fasting on October 11. Please join with us to humble ourselves before the Lord and call on Him to bless the work of our hands. We will gather for corporate prayer at 10:30 AM in Rust Auditorium.

“Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!”  (Psalm 90:17)
