New ThM/PhD Modular Course

May 18, 2015

Pastors and students can now take an advanced course from Vern Poythress on biblical interpretation in a new one-week format. The course covers topics including the role of hermeneutics, the nature of meaning, the central matter of divine authorship, grammatical-historical method, the work of the Holy Spirit in hermeneutics, and more.

The Th.M. program is designed to increase the student’s knowledge of a major field of theological learning, furthering preparation for ministry, or more advanced graduate study. The Modular ThM allows students to complete the necessary course work in week-long classes offered three times per year on Westminster’s Philadelphia campus. To provide convenience, all local transportation (excluding an airline ticket), housing, and food, are provided for those who select the travel package.

LEARN MORE AND APPLY

Biblical interpretation has been a central interest for Vern Poythress through his decades at Westminster. He identified for us five published articles as key introductions to his work on the topic. In anticipation of his upcoming, one-week ThM/PhD course this summer, we have gathered these articles together in a digital bundle, complete with a fresh introduction from Vern Poythress.

Articles include:

  • "Divine Meaning of Scripture," Westminster Theological Journal 48 (1986): 241-279.
  • "God's Lordship in Interpretation," Westminster Theological Journal 50/1 (1988): 27-64.
  • "Christ the Only Savior of Interpretation," Westminster Theological Journal 50/2 (1988): 305-321.
  • "The Presence of God Qualifying Our Notions of Grammatical-Historical Interpretation: Genesis 3:15 as a Test Case," Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 50/1 (2007): 87-103.
  • "Dispensing with Merely Human Meaning: Gains and Losses from Focusing on the Human Author, Illustrated by Zephaniah 1:2-3," Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society 57/3 (2014): 481-499.
