WESTMINSTER BUILDS FOR THE FUTURE Reflecting on the extraordinary blessing of God upon Westminster Theological Seminary over the last 80 years, the Westminster Theological Seminary Board of Trustees gathered for its year-end meeting. After Chairman Dr. John H. White opened in prayer and a Scripture meditation, President Peter A. Lillback reminded the board of the parallel economic, theological, and social challenges between now and 1929, when Westminster was founded. The leadership of the seminary, facing critical financial challenges in 2008/2009, prayerfully believes that the Lord will meet the seminary’s needs through the gifts of God’s people. President Lillback presented a strategic plan for the next five years, and the board reviewed plans for eventual additions to the Glenside campus, heard the progress toward establishing the Dallas campus independently as Redeemer Theological Seminary, and approved the establishment of the Alumni Advisory Council – a leadership group from the newly-established Westminster Alumni Association, which will consult with the Board annually. The board also adopted amendments to the Charter, Constitution, and By-laws of the seminary, as they relate to policy governance. In order to ensure that Westminster remains effective in preparing students for ministry in the 21st century, that the seminary remains at the cutting edge of Reformed scholarship, and that the seminary uphold its commitment to the historic, Reformed orthodoxy, the board passed a motion to perfect and to apply a statement of affirmations and denials concerning the doctrine of Scripture (these affirmations and denials will be made public when completed). In addition to these strategic matters, the Board welcomed and installed Mr. Dwaine Whitley as its newest trustee. Mr. Whitley is Vice President of the Hopkins-McElhannan Group in Charlotte, NC. Following a vote by the faculty in November, the Board voted and appointed Rev. Dr. David B. Garner as Associate Professor of Systematic Theology. Dr. Garner formally joins the WTS faculty on January 1, 2009. |
